Synopisis

Thicker Than Water is a 2000 documentary surf film directed by singer/songwriter Jack Johnson and his film school friend Chris Malloy. It shows surfing footage from different locations like Australia, Indonesia, Hawaii, India, and Ireland in combination with a wide range of styles of guitar music. Surfers in the film include Kelly Slater and Shane Dorian.

JACK JOHNSON: Multi-platinum musician and environmentalist, Jack Johnson has released eight studio albums and three live albums that have sold over 25 million copies worldwide. His record label and touring crew have been leaders in the greening of the music industry and his All At Once social action network connects fans with local non-profits at each tour stop. Jack, with his wife Kim, founded the Kokua Hawaii Foundation to support environmental education in Hawaii's schools and communities, as well as the Johnson Ohana Foundation to support environmental, art and music education worldwide. Proceeds from these albums and tour profits, along with Johnson’s personal charitable activities, have resulted in over $37 million donated to charity since 2001.

CHRIS MALLOY: An American filmmaker from Ojai, California. His films include 180° South, Thicker Than Water, Fisherman’s Son as well as global ad campaigns for Ford, Jeep, RAM, Coors and YETI. Malloy’s signature can be found deep in the subtext he creates within his stories and the subjects he finds. Themes that touch on hard work, respect for nature and local cultures and traditions.

EMMETT MALLOY is part of the directing duo The Malloys. They have directed some of the biggest sports commercials in recent years for brands including Nike, ESPN, Apple, Google, and the NBA. In 2015, the Malloys were nominated for DGA Commercial Directors of the Year. Emmett Malloy won a Grammy for Best Music Film, The Big Easy Express, and was nominated for his intimate portrayal of The White Stripes in Under Great White Northern Lights. In 2017, Emmett connected with Ms. Voletta Wallace and Netflix to create the official Notorious B.I.G. documentary, BIGGIE: I Got A Story To Tell, which debuted in 2021. Malloy also co-manages musician and surfer Jack Johnson. In 1998, the two launched Brushfire Records and have become leaders in the greening of the music industry.
